The Kirkwood release charity single to raise awareness of services offered to local people

Oct 9, 2023

In light of Hospice Care Week (9th – 15th October), The Kirkwood’s musical therapy singing group, The Kirkwood Chorus, have launched their first ever charity single – a touching take on Labi Siffre’s hit song ‘It Must Be Love’, which is available to download now.

Tapping into a key calendar moment which sees hospices nationwide raising awareness of their services, this new charity single aims to highlight the wide range of care and support provided by The Kirkwood team across Kirklees and encourage people to reach out for help sooner.

The song choice aptly reflects feelings of love, compassion and support, all of which are deeply rooted in The Kirkwood’s mission, and is accompanied by a heart-warming music video and a documentary which takes viewers on a journey of discovery into the life changing work carried out by The Kirkwood, meeting some of the admirable caregivers and supporters who make it all possible.

Mary Tyrrell Place, Community Engagement Lead for The Kirkwood, comments: “It is commonly thought that The Kirkwood only support people at the very end of life, or those with cancer, when in fact, help is extended to anyone affected by any life limiting illness in Kirklees, including conditions such as COPD, heart failure and dementia, and at any stage of the journey.

“The Kirkwood have been the cornerstone of our community for 36 years, and through awareness initiatives such as this, we want to continue to be there for many more years to come – guiding vulnerable people through the most challenging time of their lives.

“Not only do we hope our song helps people understand more about what we do and reach more service users, we hope it will help us raise vital funds too. It costs over £24,000 each day to provide care to those in our In-Patient Unit, in local communities and in people’s own homes, with 75% of our funding coming from the generous support of local people.”

“We’re absolutely delighted with how this project has turned out; it has been so much fun to be a part of. It has given so many of us a sense of pride to be involved with such a beautiful project. It tells our story in a unique way, which clearly communicates our message and the wide range of services we have available to support life throughout Kirklees.”

Far more than just a hospice, The Kirkwood is a movement of caregivers and supporters, seeking to improve the quality of life for those who need it – not only to patients, but offering counselling and support to loved ones and carers, helping them to manage their grief, live on and live well.

Available to download on Apple and Amazon music, from £0.69. Proceeds from each sale go to The Kirkwood, helping them to continue their essential care across Kirklees and make a real difference to the lives of local people.
